There’s nothing more frustrating than unreliable Wi-Fi. Whether you’re streaming movies, working from home, or trying to stay connected with smart devices, a Wi-Fi network that constantly drops can ruin your day.
That’s exactly what one of our customers experienced—and how Denali Tech stepped in to solve the mystery of the dropping connection.
The Call for Help: Wi-Fi Drops in the Master Bedroom
We received a call from a client for whom we had installed a professional-grade Wi-Fi network about a year ago. Their setup included five wireless access points (WAPs) strategically placed to provide strong coverage throughout their home, and everything had been running smoothly.
But recently, they started experiencing Wi-Fi drops every 10 minutes in their master bedroom. It wasn’t just minor interruptions—they were having trouble staying connected to both their Apple TV and their PC. Streaming would stop, and their computer would disconnect from the network. They needed a fix, fast.
First Attempt: Tweaking the System
The first step was to check the system remotely. Using Oversee, the cloud-based management platform we use for all our clients, we verified that the network was up to date and functioning correctly. But to be safe, we scheduled a visit.
At the client's home, we updated all equipment and reset the WAPs to factory settings. This time, we configured the system using OverC centralized management tools, making it easier to control and monitor in the future. After running speed tests in every room, everything seemed stable, and we left feeling confident.
The Problem Persists: A Deep Dive Into Troubleshooting
A few days later, the client called back—the Wi-Fi was still dropping, especially in the master bedroom. It was time for a more detailed investigation.
We went back into Oversee and decided to adjust the Wi-Fi channels manually to avoid interference. We set one access point to channel 1, another to channel 6, and the last to channel 11, hoping this would help. After rebooting the system using the WattBox, the issue persisted. Something wasn’t right.
The Breakthrough: Monitoring the Network in Real Time
To get to the root of the problem, we went back to the client’s home. This time, we wanted to see the network in action while it was under pressure. Using Windows Task Manager, we monitored the network activity graph. We needed to stress the system, so we opened Steam and began downloading a massive 100GB game, God of War, to push the network’s limits.
That’s when we saw it—the graph showed the download speed fluctuating wildly. It would spike up to 500Mbps, then drop all the way to zero, over and over again. Something was clearly interfering with the Wi-Fi signal.
Fighting the Invisible Enemy: Identifying the Interference
Using a Wi-Fi analyzer, we scanned for rogue signals that could be causing interference. That’s when we noticed a weak, but persistent signal coming from an unexpected source—an LG soundbar in the master bedroom.
It turns out the soundbar was emitting its own Wi-Fi signal, and that signal was clashing with the client’s network, causing the dramatic speed drops we were seeing. This invisible enemy had been wreaking havoc on their Wi-Fi.
The Final Fix: Unplugging the Culprit
To test our theory, we unplugged the soundbar, and immediately, the Wi-Fi stabilized. The download speed leveled out, maintaining a steady 600Mbps. The client watched as the issue was resolved before their eyes—finally, no more Wi-Fi drops.
To ensure the problem wouldn’t return, we connected the LG soundbar to the network properly using its companion app, and from then on, everything worked perfectly. The invisible enemy was defeated.
